Located along Mexico’s beautiful Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen offers something for every kind of traveler. We’ll take you through the best times to visit, types of weather to expect, excursion suggestions, and the sargassum seaweed that ended up making us pivot our itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Playa del Carmen

The best time to visit Playa del Carmen really depends on what kind of vacation you’re after.

  • December to April is considered the high season. During these months, you’ll experience the perfect weather—warm temperatures, sunny days, and little rainfall. However, it’s also the busiest time, so expect higher prices for accommodation and activities.
  • May to August brings hotter, humid weather, and this is when you might start seeing more tourists and higher demand for resorts. Though it’s not as crowded as the winter months, it can get warm, especially during midday.
  • September to November is considered off-season, and it’s also hurricane season. The weather can be more unpredictable, with heavy rains and storms, but you’ll find better hotel deals and fewer tourists around. If you’re willing to take a risk with the weather, this might be a good option for more peace and quiet.

Is Playa del Carmen Safe?

We never had any issues during our time in Playa del Carmen, and we even ventured outside the resort by foot and by taxi. Playa is considered a relatively safe destination for tourists, especially in the main touristy areas. However, as with any travel, it’s important to stay aware and take basic safety precautions:

  • Stick to well-lit, populated areas, especially after dark.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings, particularly on the beach or in crowded spots.
  • Use reputable taxi services or rideshare apps like Uber.
  • Drink responsibly and know your limits—local cocktails can be quite strong!

While the tourist areas are generally safe, it’s always a good idea to be cautious, especially if you’ don’t speak Spanish. The locals are helpful even if you don’t speak the language.

How is the Sargassum Seaweed in Playa del Carmen?

The seaweed was our only complaint about visiting Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Sargassum, a type of seaweed, has been a concern in recent years as it washes up on the beaches of the Riviera Maya. During certain times of the year, particularly in the summer months, large amounts of sargassum can accumulate on the beaches, affecting the aesthetics of the coastline.

  • Impact on Beach Activities: While sargassum doesn’t pose a health risk, it can cause a strong odor and clutter the shorelines. Most beach resorts work hard to clear it away, but it can still affect your beach time.
  • Best Time to Avoid Sargassum: If you’re particularly concerned about the seaweed, consider visiting from December to April, when sargassum is less likely to be an issue.

While sargassum can be a nuisance if you’re trying to enjoy the turquoise water, it shouldn’t deter you from visiting Playa del Carmen. Many parts of the beach remain unaffected, and the natural beauty of the area is still breathtaking. We ended up taking a ferry over to Cozumel to enjoy the beaches and it ended up being one of the best parts of the trip.
